On a chilly Wednesday Night At Armstrong Softball
Park The Jacksonville Memorial Gardens (JMG) team banged out 24 hits taking down the Rebels 21-13 in one of the season's
final games before the playoffs begin in the next few weeks.
JMG nor the Rebels, either did not know or were ashamed
of, what their season records actually were on this night. The Rebels Coach Mike only would say that his team was made up
mostly of misfits and social outcasts and that several of his players had mental conditions that were not being treated.
seemed to be the case early on as JMG was able to build an early 8-0 lead on the Rebels, maybe due to the team needed time
for their medication to kick in.
JMG's Outfielder Corey West had an RBI triple in the 1st inning and
then Blasted a towering two-run Homer over the left field fence & into the next county.

But the Rebels, like a newly mixed bowl of Jello
left in the frig, began to slowly harden up in the 3rd inning. Rebel leadoff hitter Scott Noel started the
inning with a double. From there the Rebs batted around scoring six times to cut the lead to 8-6. The Rebels might still be
batting today had it not been for a fly-out-throw-out inning ending double play.
Here is what went down on that
play. The Rebels had cut the lead to 8-5 and had the bases loaded with one out. The last batter for the Rebels was up...Rick
"The Phantom" Phil en. Rick hit a deep fly to left for the 2nd out. That flyball scored Nick Kaufman
from third to make it 8-6, but the runner on 2nd Mike Grams got hung up in a pickle between 2nd and
third and was called out for an un-successful Jedi Mind Trick.

JMG came up with two runs in the bottom of the third
on four hits including a Triple off the fence by Daniel Worley (one of four hits Worley would get on this night). With
the two runs , JMG had a 10-6 lead.
The Rebels tied it up in the top of the fourth, batting around again
ringing up seven hits. All the hits were singles except leadoff batter Scott Noel who collected his 2nd double
of the game to start the rally.
JMG responded in the bottom of the fourth putting up five runs. West doubled to
start JMG's rally. Mike Cunningham tripled then scored on an error. Later Daniel Worley went yard, a three run dinger
to top off the 5 run rally.
But the pesky Rebels were not done. No match for JMG fence busting bats, the Rebels lineup had line drive hitters
from the top to the bottom. Trying to keep pace and chasing five runs the top of the Rebels order set the table again
as Noel singled and Josh A(noname) doubled. Ben Whitlock then scored both of them with a double. However, Whitlock was
nailed at third trying to stretch his double. This unfortunate event became the beginning of the end for the Rebels.
After a flyout the Rebels were able to load the bases as Ricky Cleary, Mike Robischeau and Nick Kauffman all got hits.
But JMG shortstop Gotto made a fine play to record the third out and preserve the 15-12 lead.
JMG put the game away in the bottom of the fifth inning by batting around and scoring
six times. The big blow was a two run homer by Corey. Rebels had only a
whimper in the top of the sixth when Dick Christopher scored on a sac fly but trailed at that point 21-13.That
would be the final score as no one scored from that point. In the final analysis
the Rebels outhit JMG 26 to 24 (Ben Whitlock was 5 for 5 ). But Rebels had 22 singles and four doubles. One big difference maker was JMG’s power stroke. JMG had 3 HR, 3 triples and three doubles
with 15 singles. Also JMG reached on 5 walks and 3 errors while Rebels collected only one walk and reached
on only two errors.
