NAS JAX defeats NMC Bombers 33-13 in the Air Station 7 on 7 Flag Football Championship December 9th at Sea King Park.
JAX Quarterback Curtis Ewell threw for 5 touchdowns in the contest and the NAS defense held the NMC offense to only 7 plays
that netted over 10 yards. The rabid NAS JAX defense harassed NMC Bombers quarterback Jimmy Wilkins all game, sacking him
5 times for losses & intercepting him 3 times. NAS Jose Cruz led the ball hawking and had all three interceptions while
Ronnie Shepard had four sacks and kept constant pressure on the Bomber's Quarterback.
The NMC Bombers scored first
in the game with an 11 play drive as Wilkins hit Anthony Hosselkus with a 20 yard touchdown pass for a quick 7-0 lead. The
drive was helped, in part, by a 4th down pass interference call when NMC looks as if they had been stopped by the
defense. After the NMC TD, NAS offense was unable to move and turned the ball over to the Bombers on downs at the NAS 17 yard
line. With this great field position, It looked as if NMC might open up a big lead and take control of the game. But NAS JAX
defense rose to the occasion and mounted a goal line stand that ended up at the one fool line.
Behind 7-0 this defensive
stand became the turning point in the game for NAS JAX. With their backs against the wall NAS Quarterback Ewell hit Shepard
for 10 quick yards & then rolled out to his left and hit Kendric Stockdale with a 70 yard touchdown pass. NMC was still
leading 7-6 at this point but decided to go for a 1st down on a 4th & 1. The inspired NAS defense was all over the elusive
NMC Quarterback Wilkins when he tried to run a keeper. NAS's Ronnie Shepard made the key play, a dive, and pulled Wilkins
flag for a 3 yard loss. NAS now had the ball on the Bombers 17 yard line and took advantage scoring on a one yard touchdown
pass Ewell to Shepard.
Nearing the end of the first half, Bombers QB Wilkins then was able to move the ball on a 9
play drive to the NAS 10. But NAS corner back Jeff Key was able to break up a pass in the end zone as time expired to preserve
the 12-7 lead.
The 2nd half started badly for NMC as in the opening drive NAS safety Jose Cruz picked off a pass. This
play gave NAS the ball on the NMC 19. Ewell then hit Andre Chester for a 19 yard TD and an 18-7 lead. NAS then decided to
try for three points where the ball is placed
on the 20 yard line. NAS QB Ewell then lofted a high pass to the back
of the end zone where NAS's receiver, Jose Cruz, made an amazing leap to grab the ball away from two NMC defenders then crashed
to the turf. The play netted 3 points and gave NAS a 21-7.
From there NAS continued to build its lead. After the Bombers
were force to punt, Ewell hit Shepard again for a TD and it was 27-7. NAS Cruz then promptly picked off a Wilkins and then
Ewell engineered a clock killing 10 play drive hitting Cruz for a 10 yard Touchdown
making it 33-7.
was able to make it 33-13 when he got loose for a 39 yard TD run but it was much to late to stage a comeback at that point.
NAS QB Ewell was 15-29 passing and 218 yards. Chester and Shepard both had 5 catches. For NMC Wilkins also was 15 for 29 but
for only 104 yards. Hosselkus had 8 catches on the day for NMC and Wilkins also ran for 70 yards.
