CONNER SMITH GOES "DOWNTOWN" TWICE, CHAMPINE MAKES TWO STELLER DEFENSIVE PLAYS AS A'S ROLL

MOMENT BEFORE IMPACT. CONNER SMITH ABOUT TO HIT THIS PITCH OUT OF THE PARK IN 1ST INNING

The Athletics blasted three home runs out of the park and used solid pitching from Andrew Deguzman to defeat the Orioles 11 to 2 in NOL Little League baseball action April 16 at Naval Air Station Jacksonville Florida. Connor Smith blasted home runs in the first & the fourth inning while Deguzman also "went yard" with a first-inning home run for the Athletics. Deguzman went four solid innings striking out eight and also had three hits and scored three runs on the day.

The Athletics set the tone of the game in the very first inning when Smith and Deguzman hit first-inning home runs for a 2-0 lead. Deguzman, after walking the first batter, struck out the side in the first inning putting the Orioles in an early two-run hole.

In the top of the Athletics second inning, Rhett Dixon reached on error and then scored when Chris Commander cranked a double over the head of the Orioles right fielder. Then with the score 3-0, the Athletics loaded the bases when Pat Barrett walked and leadoff hitter Derek Champine reached on an error.

A'S COMMANDER BEATS THROW TO THIRD

With the bases-loaded and one out Connor Smith stood at the dish fully intending to bust the game wide open for the Athletics at this point. But the Orioles coach Page had made a pitching change and Isaac was now on the mound. Isaac was able to get Smith to pop up to the infield. The next batter for the Athletics Chance Moore hit a line shot up the middle that looked like a sure two run single. But amazingly the ball hit the second base bag and caromed to the Orioles second baseman Barksdale who flipped the ball to second for a forceout on Champine to end the inning.

A'S CHANCE MOORE RIPS THE BALL TOWARDS CENTERFIELD. BALL HITS 2ND BASE BAG AND CAROMED TO O'S 2ND BASE FOR AN OUT.

Inspired now the Orioles went right to work in the bottom of the second. Henry hit a ground ball that scooted past the Athletics second baseman into right field for a hit. Henry moved to second when a pitch got away from the Athletics Catcher. Payton then slapped a ground ball just over the third-base bag in down the left-field line for a run batted in double. With the score now 3-1, Payton advanced to third when a pitch bounced in the dirt. The Athletics catcher blocked the ball and made a play on Payton at third. But Payton beat the throw with a slide. The next oriole batter reached when a third strike got away from the Athletics catcher. A walk loaded the bases with one out. Suddenly the Orioles had a real pressure cooker going.

Athletics coach Goldfield went to the mound to talk to his team about how to break up this rally the Orioles had going. Whatever he said seem to work. Deguzman got the next batter on an infield fly. Barksdale, The next oriole hitter, hit a high deep twisting flyball to left field that had extra bases written all over it. But the Athletics leftfielder Pat Barrett made a fine running catch to end the inning and preserve the 3 to 1 lead.

In the top of the fourth the Athletics got infield hits from Commander and Champine. Running the bases aggressively the Athletics tried to execute a double steal. The Orioles seem to have it sniffed out & got Commander hung up between home and third. However a throw to the plate was in the dirt & Commander was able to score. With the score 4-1, Smith stepped up and slammed a two-run homer to make it 6-1. From there consecutive two-out hits by Moore, Deguzman, Parker Barrett and Alexander Goldfield scored two more runs to make it 8-1.

CONNE SMITH HAMMERS HIS 2ND HR ON THE DAY, A TWO RUN SHOT IN THE 4TH

The Orioles were able to get one run back in the bottom of the fourth. Payton scratched out an infield hit and was able to move around to third after a couple of pitches got away from the Athletics catcher. Payton then scored on Bruce's grounder to second. This however was the end of the orioles highlight reel.

ORIOLES BATTER KHYRIN LEAPS TO AVOID BEING HIT BY PITCH IN 4TH INNING

From there it was the Athletics relief pitcher Derek Champine who made two brilliant defensive stops. One on a rocket line drive back at the mound. The other was a short check swing pop fly down the third-base line that had Champine make a diving grab of the ball as he rolled across the ground.

The Athletics added three runs later in the game. The Final 11-2.
