The Reds, riding a strong pitching performance by Wells Madison, used solid defense and timely hitting to defeat the Tigers 8-4 Tuesday at Richard C Davis Little League Complex aboard Naval Air Station Jacksonville. With The Victory, The Reds earned the Championship Trophy for the ages 10 to 12 Division of the NOL Little League.

The Tigers, the Playoffs #1 seed, had gone 14-4-1 on the season but lost earlier in the playoffs to
the Reds 10-8.

Schuster Pitching to Reds "Big C"

The Contest was delayed Briefly due to threatning weather. But when the game started The Tigers wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard. Tigers leadoff hitter Robert Schuster walked and Scored when Mile McGee Blasted the ball out of the park for a 2-run dinger and a 2-0 first inning lead for the Vistiting Tigers.

The Out of the Park Blast Gave Tigers a quick 2-0 lead

But in the Bottom of the 2nd inning the Reds rallied. After one out Reds Batter Jack Barksdale swung and missed a third Strike. The  pitch from Tigers starter Schuster was in the dirt  and got away from the Tigers Catcher Tommy Murphy. As a result of the heads up baserunning Barksdale was able to reach firstbase safely.

Reds Centerfielder Ben Chafin then smacks a 2-1 pitch over the Fence for a 3-run "Big-Fly" and just like that...the Reds had the lead 3-2.

The next Reds batter bunted to the mound and was thrown out for the 2nd out. This brought the Reds leadoff hitter Nick Garas up and he hit a line drive single into left. Garas then stole 2nd. The next Reds batter Brackin walked and both runners advanced on a Wild Pitch.

Wells Madison scored them both hitting a 3-0 pitch for a two run single into right field to make the score 5-2 Reds after two complete innings.

The Tigers got something going in the top of the third when McGee singled, & stole 2nd.

McGee had three hits and scored three times in game

Tigers Next Batter Micheal Barker then had a pitch bounce off his helmet as he ducked a low inside pitch. But instead of taking a base for being hit by a pitch, it was ruled that the ball had grazed Barker's bat before bouncing off his coconut. Therefore a foul strike. Reds Pitcher Madison then got Barker on a called strike three.

This turned out to be a key development in the ebb and flow of this ball game. Instead of 1st and 2nd - none out.... the Tigers only had McGee on 2nd and one out.

But McGee moved to third on a passed ball and then scored when Tigers Carter Stanford hit a grounder up the middle that Reds pitcher deflected to short where Garas completed the play and threw Carter out. The inning ended with the Reds clinging to a slim 5-3 lead.

The Tigers Defense was able to hold the Reds scoreless in the bottom of the Third so the Tigers came to bat in the top of the fourth still behind 5-3.

The Tigers get a rally going in the Top of the fourth. After one out Luke Morgan
gets a base knock and Dylan Allen gets on base also. The Tigers now had the
tying runners on base and only one out.

But Reds Pitcher Madison is able to get out of the Jam getting a strike out and Popup to end the threat. Score stayed at 5-3 REDS

In the REDS fourth ining Gino Dela Cruz started it with a single to third and Garas singled also. Brackin then stepped up hit a gapper to Right that scored both Dela Cruz and Garas. Brackin beat the Tigers relay throw to third with a slide. When the dust cleared... it was 7-3 Reds and Brackin was standing on third

Then beats the play at third with a slide

Madison then bangs out a single to score Brackin and at that point Micheal Barker came in pitch & try to stop the Reds Rally. He did... getting one batter on a popup and then a grounder to short that Schuster turned into a double play and that is how the inning ended with the REDS leading 8-3.

In the Top of the Fifth McGee again reached on a single and again he stole 2nd. Barker, up next for Tigers hit a long fly ball deep to center almost sure to be an extra base hit. But REDS Centerfielder Burkland turned and ran back to make a dandy running catch. McGee returned to 2nd and tagged up and make it to third with a slide just ahead of the relay from the outfield.

McGee then was able to score when a pitch in the dirt allowed him to dash for home and slide in under Madisons tag.

But McGee slid in safely

Madison was able to get the next batter out but Tigers rally hopes stayed alive as Tommy Murphy lined a single and then stole 2nd. But Madison got Bubba Smith to groundout to escape further damage. Scoreboard showed REDS 8 TIGERS 4 with the Reds coming in to bat in the last half of the fifth.

With Barker still pitching, The Tigers needed badly to keep the REDS scoreless in the bottom of the 5th

Barker got the first two batters to hit groundouts but then faced Chafin who already had a homerun on the day. Chafin singled but was left stranded as Barker got another groundout to end the inning. The Tigers came in for it's final turn at bat trailing 8-4

Game story & photo are still work in progess- Check back this weekend.

But Reds pitcher Madison, smelled victory and was virually untouchable at this point. He stuck out the first two Tigers batters easily. But Tigers Ben Ketchum was able to foul off a few pitches and worked Madison for a walk. Coach Brackin came to the mound to remove Madison who had thrown 90 pitches. He called upon Nick Garas to try and get the final out. Tigers leadoff batter Schuster was first pitch swinging and hit a  hard line shot toward right field. Coming off the bat it looked as if it maybe an extra base hit for Schuster.

But the Reds rightfielder was in perfect position and made a fine running catch for the final out & to retire the Tigers.

It was over. Reds players threw hats and gloves into the air as they ran into right field & dived into a pile to celebrate.

8-4 the final.

Interview with  REDS Coach Brackin

Ben Chafin, Reds Hero, Interview

TIGERS NOL Regular season Best record & League playoff Runner up trophy presentation.

It was a Great season and Championship game

The whole ball game felt as if I were watching a Big League ball game. I was very impressed with the great skills and attitudes of these young players. Obviously these ballplayers have been well coached and that is a reflection of the coaches as well as the parents. Hope I can give the game back to you all in a format that will help capture the moment & so you might share it with your friends/relatives.

I ask that you make it a point to consider a visit to Ortega Hurricane Grill & Wings and tell Them what you thought of the Web story & photos. Tell them Stew sent you. That will do alot for me and help us do more of this in the future.
